NOWFE 2006: The Post-Katrina Experience

[Editorial] [New Orleans] |

I've attended the New Orleans Wine and Food Experience two times before this year's event. Like so many who are familiar with the long weekend's wine-soaked festivities, I wondered: how would this year be different? A mere 8 months after Katrina and some less-than-effective levees wiped out 80% of the city--and with most of the damaged areas still far from recovery--would the Crescent City's wine and food experience be changed beyond recognition? |

You like to drink wine. You drink a lot of wine. Of course you do; it tastes good! But what do you do with all those empty bottles? You could always recycle them...that's good for the Earth. Or you could make them into gorgeous wine bottle lamps. Or you could make a house out of them.
But if you want to do something wacky and decorative, with absolutely no practical value at all (but pretty), and simple enough for anyone with brute strength and zero crafts ability...try a wine bottle tree! |

Review: Galatoire's Bistro, Baton Rouge

[Editorial] [Baton Rouge] |
When the famous New Orleans restaurant, Galatoire's, announced shortly after Hurricane Katrina struck that it was opening a restaurant in Baton Rouge, much of New Orleans rose up in anguished protest. To be fair, several New Orleans-based businesses had just announced that they were moving to other, undamaged cities, abandoning the place that had allowed them to grow without a second glance. (Ruth's Chris Steak House, we're looking at you.) It was painful to think that a New Orleans icon like Galatoire's might be joining them.
Then the owners made it clear that they had been planning a Baton Rouge restaurant for some time, and that they were definitely going to re-open their French Quarter restaurant as soon as possible. (It's open now.) Tempers died down, and Baton Rouge inhabitants, both previous and post-Katrina, started simply looking forward to that highest form of ordinary entertainment for south Louisiana: a new restaurant to try. |

Savanna Samson is a porn star, and a noted one at that. She is the star of 25 sexually explicit films, a two-time winner of the Adult Video News Award for best actress, and her work with Jenna Jameson in "The New Devil in Miss Jones," a remake of a classic, won last year's award for the best all-girl sex scene.
And, she makes wine. Not just any celebrity-label vanity wine, either; Robert Parker has given her wine, a 2004 vintage of an Italian red wine that she calls Sogno Uno (Dream One), a score of 90-91. |

In a box of 64 Crayola crayons… The look and color of wine.

[The Pedestrian Wine Drinker] |
| One of the first things to consider when tasting a wine is its appearance. It's rare nowadays to find a wine whose looks tell you much. At one time, a dull, cloudy wine might reveal a badly-made wine; now most winemakers use modern techniques that prevent visible problems. But it could happen, so we keep considering it as a factor. Besides, it's fun. Wine is pretty, so it's pleasant to look at, especially if the color is one of your favorites. And you can get clues about the grapes and the wine from the color, although those clues tend to be read mainly by people with more wine experience than your humble narrator. |

Water with Your Wine?

[The Pedestrian Wine Drinker] [USA] |
Adding water to your wine is almost as old as wine itself. The Romans and Greeks would have never considered drinking wine without adding water first; in fact, they considered it guache behavior on a par today with chugging Night Train out of a paper bag. Even in mediterranean countries today, wine mixed with water is considered a proper beverage for the family's children, with less water being added as the child grows older. Few of us in the U.S. want water in our wine, though. What we don't know is that much of the time, we're getting it anyway. And yet we should probably be thankful that we're getting our wine watered down for us. |

| If you're into do-it-yourself--and more importantly, you need a large supply of alcoholic beverage and you don't really care what it tastes like--you can always brew up a batch of "hobo wine" in about two weeks using just water, fruit drink, sugar, and yeast. Mmmm, Chateau de Bob Minutemaid Brown 2006! A favorite of broke college boys everywhere. |

What's in a nose? The basics of wine-smelling.

[The Pedestrian Wine Drinker] |
| Now that you've allowed your eyes to drink in the beauty of the color and general appearance of your glass of wine, it's time to smell it. The how-to part is easy. Take your glass, and gently swirl the wine around inside of it. Try not to slosh it over the edge; this gets easier with practice. (It also teaches you not to fill your wine glass so full, Mr. Oinky.) Stick your nose into the opening of the glass--you can go pretty far and still be appropriate, but remember, the object is to SMELL the wine, not to stuff your entire body into the glass starting with your nose. If it begins to look or feel like the latter, back off a tad. On the other hand, don't sniff daintily several inches above the mouth of the glass. You'll miss most of the hot nasal action. |

Viva Italia at Long Last
"What’s it all about? Integrity--there simply is no quality in wine without integrity"
–-Jens Schmidt, Owner, Montecastelli Selections
This past summer, Jon and Laurie of Cork & Bottle made a trip to the Montecastelli Wine Fair in Tuscany to find some new discoveries (we know, it’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it!). Montecastelli is a Tuscan-based company that works with Italian wineries focused on estate-grown wines made organically and biodynamically--in other words, wines that are painfully pure and true to region and type. Although the air conditioning was in short supply, the food was good and the wines were incredible.
Over 40 producers featuring about 300 wines were tasted over three days. The producers were charming (and some of them even spoke English); needless to say, the wines were amazing. Jon and Laurie left the fair just dying to get their new discoveries back to Cork & Bottle, and since July they’ve been waiting for them to show up. Waiting. For nearly 6 months. The good news is that the wines are starting to arrive and the nearly 6-month wait for these new discoveries did nothing to diminish the excitement about them. The following wines are some of the highlights of the trip; they are now in stock in both stores and available for purchase on-line.
